Critical Reflection

Module reflection:

We are constantly using critical thinking and critical reflection in our everyday lives on a subtle level. Critical thinking is a few step process that starts by describing the problem, analysing the problem and gathering information online while cross reference the information to ensure that the information gathered is a valid and true. Next is to solve for the problem and evaluate the solution proposed. The next step is the most crucial step and is linked to critical reflection, which is to reflect on what has been done, so as to ensure that we will not repeat the same mistake in the future. As mentioned earlier in my self-introduction letter, I managed to achieve the goals I set for myself for this module, which is to be more confident when speaking in a large group and writing skills. Before the actual presentation, my team and I had done numerous rehearsals in order to prepare ourself. With the feedback provided by my teammates, it enable me to experiment the type of presentation style that I am more comfortable which allows me to be more confident when presenting in front of a crowd.

Another take away for this module is my technical writing, I learnt that my previous style of writing a report is not accurate as we must be subjective in the writing, while knowing the importance of citation as improper or no citation is a serious issue of plagiarism. However as there are not many opportunities to do citation, I might be lacking in that regard which can be improved.

Project learning:

What I have learnt while working on the research project is that others have their own opinion which will be different from you, and by integrating these opinion together we are able to produce a better solution compared to the original one, and all it takes is a small and harmless inspiration. I have also learned that by having an open mind to learn and accept criticisms, you are be able to improve yourself as a person in the future. I am able to upgrade my skill sets in terms of presentation and teamwork skills. For presentation skills, we held many rehearsals and practice before the actual presentation while my team members gave feedback how to improve, these allowed me to be more confident in my presentation skills, eliminating the use of filler words, stuttering, and having a good body language. While working on this project, my team have enabled me to be a better communicator and being more open to accept criticism through the constructive feedback they have given me. The environment that my team is working with allowed me to better voice out my opinion and feedback without fear of judgement, hence enabling me to be more confident for future group work.

For the report writing portion for the project is the usage and phrasing of my words, I tend to require help from my teammates to paraphrase my portion as I have difficult putting my thoughts into words. This is an area I feel like I could work on more for future reports

Submission 1a: Descriptive Reflection: Self Introduction Letter

Subject: Self Introduction Dear Mr Brad Blackstone,   My name is Justin, and I am writing to introduce myself to you as a student in your Critical Thinking and Communication (UCS) class. Some background about me is that I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a diploma in mechanical engineering. In the beginning, I had no idea what I liked, so I chose engineering as mathematics and physics are my strong suit. During my final year project in Polytechnic, I met with many industry leaders in the field of engineering, where they showed on the potential of engineering can do and how they are able to impact and make changes to people's life, and it successfully managed to pique my interest of engineering, hence I decided to continue my choice of engineering in university hence enrolling in this engineering program.  My weakness in communication is public speaking, as I tend to feel nervous when speaking to large crowd and in a classroom setting as well, because I am worried

Importance of Communication Skills

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread                     inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important). It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.” Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)       My take on this quote is that for engineers that are specialised in their field, whenever they must explain a topic needing their expertise, they tend to talk too in depth about it to the point where not everyone is able to understand what they are saying unless they have some background knowledge about the topic.  Thus, engineers being undervalued is due to the fact that we are unable to simplify the terms for the common people to understand as the things might be too complicated, hence usually people would be asked to explain it in layman terms
